A Cheerful Heart: The Medicine We Forget We Need

By LaToya Jackson — Lesson in Everyday

There’s a quiet power in the heart that chooses joy. Not the kind of joy that ignores reality or pretends struggle isn’t real, but the kind that rises with hope even on the days when the weight feels heavy. Proverbs 17:22 tells us, “A cheerful heart is good medicine,” and if there’s anything life continues to teach me, it’s that joy is one of God’s most healing gifts.

A cheerful heart isn’t loud. It doesn’t demand attention. It doesn’t require a perfect day or problem-free life. It thrives in the small moments, in the soft places where God whispers, “I’m still with you.”

Finding Joy in the Small Things

Joy doesn’t always arrive with fireworks. Sometimes it’s found in something as simple as a warm cup of coffee, a quiet morning, the sound of laughter drifting through the room, or the peace that comes from finishing a long day. A cheerful heart grows when we pause long enough to notice the small blessings that God places in our path daily.

Gratitude becomes the soil where joy can take root.

Protecting What Enters Your Spirit

A cheerful heart also requires intentional guarding. What we feed our spirit shapes how we feel, how we think, and how we respond to life. When we surround ourselves with negativity, bitterness, or constant chaos, our hearts begin to carry what we consume.

But when we fill our minds with Scripture, our ears with uplifting conversation, our hearts with truth and encouragement, joy becomes our natural response. Healing begins on the inside, long before it shows on the outside.

The Gift of Community and Encouragement

One thing I’ve learned is that joy grows stronger in community. God often sends people to remind us that we are not walking this journey alone. A cheerful heart is supported by loved ones who pray for you, encourage you, listen to you, and challenge you to keep going when life tries to slow you down.

And in return, we become medicine for others. A kind word, a soft smile, a simple “I’m here”—these small acts can revive a weary soul.

The Rest That Makes Room for Joy

Sometimes we forget that rest is holy. Rest is not laziness, and slowing down is not weakness. Rest gives your heart a chance to breathe, recover, and reset. A worn-out heart can’t produce joy. But a rested heart? That’s where joy finds room to grow again.

Choosing Joy Every Day

At the end of the day, having a cheerful heart is a choice—a daily one. Some days that choice feels easy. Other days it feels like work. But God honors the effort. Even choosing a little joy is still choosing joy.

A cheerful heart says:

“I trust God even here.”

“I believe better is coming.”

“I can smile again, even if it’s small.”

“I can carry hope with me today.”

And that kind of heart?

It heals. It strengthens.

It becomes the medicine we didn’t even realize we needed.

May you choose the kind of joy that lifts you, heals you, and points you back to God’s goodness. One moment, one breath, one day at a time. 💙🦋
