Who Helps the Helper? A Moment to Revive

An evening reflection by LA | Lesson in Everyday

Tonight, I find myself wondering: Who helps the helper?

Who tends to the one everyone calls the hero? Who listens to the person who has been running on empty while making sure everyone else is taken care of?

When you are the last one to eat and the last one to sleep, who notices? Who gives you their ear? Who reminds you that you need rest, too?

It is a lot to be the caregiver, the rescuer, and the answering machine all in one. There is always another call, another need, another situation that seems to require whatever strength you have left.

You can love people deeply and still get tired. You can be grateful for the opportunity to serve and still need someone to serve you a meal, hear your heart, or simply say, “Go rest. I’ve got this.”

Sometimes, the person everyone depends on needs somewhere to lean.

Acknowledge Where You Are

One thing I have learned over the last year is how to acknowledge where I am, state it, and sit with it—but not stay in it.

Sometimes that sounds like:

“I am tired.”

“I feel overwhelmed.”

“I need help, and I don’t have the words to explain everything yet.”

“I care, but I don’t have the capacity to take this on tonight.”

There is honesty in those words. They acknowledge that I am human. I have needs. I have limits. Resetting is sometimes required.

And it is okay.

I am learning to give myself room to recognize what I feel without turning that feeling into a permanent address. Sitting with it gives me a chance to listen, pray, and understand what I need. Moving forward may take time, support, and more than one evening of rest.

Sometimes, the next step is simply admitting that I cannot keep going at the same pace.

Even the Willing Need Rest

In Mark 6:31, Jesus invited His disciples to come away and rest after a demanding season of ministry. There were so many people coming and going that they had not even had an opportunity to eat.

That detail meets me right where I am.

Jesus noticed their need for rest. Their work mattered, and so did their humanity.

I believe we need that reminder when we become so focused on helping that we stop paying attention to ourselves. Prayer can make room for an honest conversation with God: “Lord, I want to keep showing up, but I need care, too.”

And sometimes, receiving that care means allowing another person to help. It means answering honestly when someone asks how we are doing. It means making a specific request instead of hoping someone will notice.

“Could you check on me tomorrow?”

“Could you handle dinner tonight?”

“Do you have a few minutes to listen?”

We deserve to be known beyond what we can do for everyone else.

Work With the Setting You Are In

Life has its own settings. Some seasons ask us to adjust our pace, our expectations, or the way we show up.

We may not be able to change every circumstance tonight. We can still do what we can, with what we have, in the setting we are in.

Maybe tonight you can eat something before answering another message. Maybe you can let a call wait, ask someone to share a responsibility, or give yourself permission to go to bed.

Maybe you can remember something you enjoy and make room for a small piece of it again.

Sometimes, a little reminder becomes the nudge that gets us back to actively living—participating in our own lives, noticing joy, and making room for dreams that have been waiting underneath everyone else’s needs.

A revive. That is what I am calling it.

A moment to breathe, receive care, and return to the parts of ourselves we have been too tired to tend.

Tonight’s Lesson

Acknowledge where you are. State it honestly. Sit with it long enough to understand what you need, then take one caring step forward.

You are allowed to need help while being helpful. You are allowed to rest while there is still work to do.

Tonight, consider:

  • What have I been carrying that I need to name?
  • What care have I been postponing for myself?
  • Who can I ask for support?
  • What would a small moment of revival look like tonight?

An Evening Prayer

Lord, You see the person behind every responsibility. You know where I am tired and what I have struggled to say aloud. Help me acknowledge my needs without shame. Give me wisdom to set limits, courage to ask for help, and openness to receive care. Renew my strength and help me make room for the life You have given me. Tonight, teach me how to rest in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
